Taylor Calva

Educator
Brief info

Taylor(she/they) has always been passionate about nature. She grew up camping with her family, which sparked her love for wildlife. Since she was a kid, they knew that upkeeping the environment, so other generations could enjoy it was important to her. In high school, she took AP environmental science, which led them to attend UCSC as an ecology major. There, she joined a field biology class, where for the first time ever, they were able to get hands-on experience in nature. On a camping trip with their class, she met Jayden, who happens to be an educator for HAWKS. Through him, they found an organization where she could combine her love for nature and her love for working with kids.

Throughout the past year, she discovered a new, favorite hobby called herping, the search of wild amphibians and reptiles out in nature. At Santa Cruz, she has been immersed in a whole new variety of species, including gopher snakes, various salamanders and California newts. One of her favorite parts of herping is introducing her friends to animals they never expected to find living right outside of their dorms. She is thrilled to get to share this same curiosity and passion towards nature with all the kids at HAWKS.
